SITE RECLAMATION ACTIVITY <br /> APRIL 1997 TO MARCH 1998 <br /> Reclamation activity during the 1997 reporting year (April 1997 to <br /> March 1998) consisted of site cleaning, maintenance of vegetated <br /> areas, upgrading of Tailings Pond No. 4 ' s upland runoff diversion <br /> and implementation of the Consent Decree projects negotiated with <br /> CDPHE to provide a mechanism for release from discharge permits <br /> which would then allow final site reclamation to proceed. <br /> In the following sections of this report, environmental activity <br /> during the 1997 reporting year and planned environmental activity <br /> for the 1998 reporting year is discussed on a site by site basis. <br /> A summary of acreage permitted, disturbed, and undergoing <br /> reclamation is presented in Table A (page 2) . <br /> AMERICAN TUNNEL PORTAL AREA - Plate No. 1 <br /> During the 1997 reporting year, no additional acreage was disturbed <br /> or reclaimed. A total of 5. 96 acres were removed from the permit <br /> area either because the area was never disturbed or reclamation was <br /> complete (borrow area and old Lead Carbonate Tailings Pond area) . <br /> Reclamation and environmental activity during 1997 consisted of; <br /> 1) general site cleaning. Solid waste was disposed of via the <br /> local landfill operator (ie wood, paper etc. ) and steel was <br /> recycled through a metal scrap dealer. <br /> 2) maintenance of stormwater runoff controls. <br /> 3) maintenance and repair on water treatment settling Pond No. l. <br /> This included: repair and replacement of the dock used for <br /> access to the mudcat and pump used for pond cleaning. <br /> Cribbing and backfilling to widen the dike between settling <br /> ponds No. l and No. 2 to improve access for equipment and to <br /> strengthen the dike. Embankment repair and placement of rip- <br /> rap along the toe of the Pond No. l embankment exposed to <br /> Cement Creek flow. This last project was permitted by the <br /> Corps of Engineers under a Nationwide Section 404 Permit. <br /> 4) treatment of water discharge from the portal along with <br /> diverted Cement Creek water according to the CDPS Permit for <br /> this site and the related Consent Decree agreement with CDPHE. <br /> Treatment included periodic cleaning of the settling ponds <br /> with a mudcat dredge and tanker trucks. The material removed <br /> was hauled to the Mayflower Mill-Tailings Pond No. 4 . <br /> There were no permit parameter violations during the 1997 <br /> reporting year. <br />
