1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report presents a limited stability evaluation of the final pit plan for mining of
surface exposures of the Sunnyside vein in the Sunnyside Basin near Silverton in San
Juan County, Colorado. Mining plans were developed by the staff at the Sunnyside
Mine. Review of the plans and development of geologic data was initiated after
completion of the first bench.
This assessment is based upon limited structural geologic data developed by the
Sunnyside geologic staff, with technical definition provided by J. F. T. Agapito &
Associates, Inc. (JFTA). JFTA personnel visited the site on two separate occasions to
observe the geologic environment, inspect rock quality and structure, and to ground truth
rock structural mapping performed by the Sunnyside staff.
The pit is relatively limited in size with the maximum highwall reaching a height of
120 feet. Benches were planned at intervals between 20 and 33 ft with face angles of
70°. Safety benches were planned to be 12 ft wide, which produced a composite slope
angle of 56°.
This report is presented in four sections. Sections 1.0 and 2.0 are the introduction
and conclusions/recommendations, respectively. Section 3.0 presents the geology and
rock structural data available for the area. Section 4.0 examines stability impacts of
geologic structure and the global stability of the pit configuration.
1
