4.6 BLAST DAMAGE
Blasting practices at the Sunnyside Pit have produced unacceptable amounts of wall
damage. These practices were reviewed by JFI'A and recommendations for changes
were made in a letter of August 15, 1988, which is attached as Appendix C.
Modifications have been implemented and have produced substantial improvements
at the west end of Bench 2, as shown in Figure 3.2. Practice of controlled blasting and
application of smooth-wall blasting at the final wall are necessary to assure long-term
stability of the pit.
4.7 STABILITY OF TALUS MATERIAL ON THE UPPER EAST
WALL
A section of the preexisting talus slope has been cut in the upper portion of the east
wall. The face angle in the talus appears steep (600 to 700) and should be reduced for
final reclamation. The face will be left as-is throughout production to protect a drainage
ditch above the pit. This area should be inspected frequently to detect any cracking or
movement indicating instability during operations. Potential for instability will increase
if the talus becomes saturated by fall thunderstorms.
22
