Reclamation Plan
Engineer Office
Inactive Mine Sludge Disposal Site
Standard Metals Corporation
Silverton Operation
Engineering Office Sludge Disposal Site
As of July 10, 1965, Standard Metals Corporation has discontinued disposal of
mine water sludge in the engineering office settling pond along the Animas
River.
Upon evaluation of the American Tunnel mine water sludge analysis now being
conducted at CDS Laboratories in Durango, Colorado, the following reclamation
plan could be implemented by the 1986 excavation season for the inactive mine
water sludge disposal site. The reclamation plan would incorporate the
following:
1. The insitu burial (capping) of the entire site with approximately two
to three feet of suitable earthen material (glacial moraine deposit)
from the adjacent hillside.
2. The construction of an adequate flood control dike on the northeast
corner of the site.
3. An approximate final slope of 3:1 or 4:1 of the entire site from
borrow area to river embankment.
4. The placement of rip-rap, where needed, on the existing embankment
river interface.
5. The revegetation of the entire site with appropriate grass and forb
species for the particular site.
6. Contingency: if the analysis of the American Tunnel mine water sludge
is unacceptable for insitu containment on the existing inactive tailings
pond site, the mine water sludge will be eventually removed to an
adequate final disposal site.
