ABEL, JR. 4- 310 LOOKOUT VIEW COURT
MINING ENGINEER GOLDEN,CO 80Q1
303-279-4901
FAX 27"163
/ / / -A JFAW20Ho wm
January 15, 2001
Mr. Larry Perino Rece'V05d
Sunnyside Gold Corp
P.O. Box 177
Silverton, CO 81433 EB 12 j
Reference: American Tunnel Bulkheads #2 and #3 OivlsDu fM e/a1d08
Dear Larry: s&Geology
This is the letter report you requested for the design of the
two additional bulkheads for the American Tunnel .
The purpose of Bulkhead #2 is to impound the approximately
630 gpm of water entering the American Tunnel between Bulkhead #2
(approximately Station 20+00) and existing Bulkhead #1 (Station
79+50) . The planned Bulkhead #2 location is approximately 59+50
feet toward the portal from Bulkhead #1 . Bulkhead #1 impounded
the approximately 730 gpm of water flowing from the Brenneman,
Washington and Sunnyside veins, as indicated on Figure la. The
total American Tunnel water inflow between Bulkhead #1 and the
planned location of Bulkhead #2 includes one major inflow,
approximately 580 gpm of metal-laden and acidic groundwater
between approximately Station 27+00 and Station 31+00 associated
with a zone of fractured latite porphyry. Figures la, lb and lc,
modified from the Simon Hydro-Search February 11, 1992 report
indicate the quantity and low quality of the this inflow.
The purpose of Bulkhead #3 (approximately Station 3+75) is to
impound as much as possible of the approximately 170 gpm of better
quality but still metal-laden water entering the American Tunnel
between the planned location of Bulkhead #2 (approximately Station
20+00) and the portal (Station 0+00) . Figure 2 presents a plan
view of the American Tunnel from the portal (P-3) to Station
34+00. Figure 3 provides a cross section of the American Tunnel
from the portal to Station 31+00 . Table 1 provides a log of the
water inflow locations from the air door (Station 2+20) and
Station 29+40 and indicates the recommended location of Bulkhead
#3 at Station 3+75.
The location for Bulkhead #2 was selected at a dry and
apparently impermeable rock section of the American Tunnel,
