Farrell .
Attached you will find results of acid base potential tests and
DPTA extract for metals on AT settling pond sludge and Tailings
Pond 1-44 slimes, as requested in your January 6 , 1989 letter . It
was not possible to sample the Tailings Pond f-1 slimes because of
ice and snow cover and the accumulation of AT and Terry sludge
deposited at t:ie site . °
The requested -inter--, . disposal of the T sludge in Tailings
Pond 1-74 has been approximately 50 percent completed . The Cold
;weather , frequent snowstor:::s and eGui^.rent brea,;downs have
hinc'ered our progress on this project. :e are maintaining our
water quality, but need to comciete the Droject . Tie have
experienced no detectable quality changes in our Tailings Pond H4
water discharge that could be associated with this project .
From the acid base potential tests performed on the sluc:ge, it
appears that it has enough residual lime in it to actually act as
a bufferinc agent for the tailinr;s pony' . The metals DPTA
extracts sno:: relative equiv«lent concentrations to the Tailings
Ponca »4 sli%1es except for Zinc and cadi'.1'_um. .
Ne are current!y evaluating permanent options for disposal of the
AT FnG Terry slu-Jqe for suh:Tlittal to the Division. From the
information obtained from these tests , we believe that permanent
disposal in Tailings Ponca 114 eight be a viable o^tion to add to
our list of alternatives , and would welccine your input on whether
the Division agrees .
l
