Waterfowl - Waterfowl are prime species due to their value as game. Many species are summer
breeding residents but the potential for summer breeding is great. They are ubiquitous but restricted
to waterways or impoundments.
Ferruginous Hawk - The major thrust of the potential impact will be on the nesting success of this
bird. Ferruginous hawks do not tolerate human activity close to the nest during incubation and
disturbance may result in reduced nestling survival or nest desertion. Due to their habits of nesting
in low juniper trees and on the ground, this hawk is vulnerable to unintentional as well as intentional
harassment.
To minimize the detrimental impacts to this species, employees will be restricted to improved road
use.
Golden Eagle - Golden eagles are common and often seen in the area of potential impact, but
unlike ferruginous hawks, golden eagles are very tolerant of human activity, even during nesting.
There are three known active nesting sites in the vicinity of the projected mine portal, but it is
unlikely that more than one is used in any given year.
Since it was believed by Dr. Clayton M. White that the nest sites would not be abandoned during
portal activities, no specific measures are planned for the portal to accommodate the golden eagle.
However, no surface exhaust or ventilation fans will be located within 1/4 -mile of the known nesting
sites.
Bald Eagle - Impact to northern bald eagles is not a major concern in this project.
Peregrine Falcon - Impact to peregrine falcons is not a concern in this project.
Sage Grouse - The major concern of potential impact to sage grouse is the disruption of normal
reproductive behavior by destroying "leks ". Since no "leks" have heretofore been located, the
applicant will support a thorough field research effort to locate "leks ". If "leks" are observed,
appropriate mitigation measures will be developed with the assistance of Colorado Division of
Wildlife.
Ring- necked Pheasant - Impact to this species is not a concern within the scope of this project.
Mountain Plover - Since the mountain plover is considered an accidental visitor or straggler in the
area of potential impact it is of little concern.
Minor Revision #147 (05/2011) IV -5 0
