Seedbed Preparation. Seedbed preparation measures will generally not be practiced on reclaimed areas. •
Dired hauling of topsoil is the preferred method of topsoil replacement. In addition, invading native species
will be present on reclaimed areas topsoiled from stockpiles. Seedbed preparation such as disking on the
contour may reduce germination or establishment of desirable native plant species in these topsoiled areas.
Rangeland drills are used for seeding operations and this type of equipment is able to handle the rough field
conditions left by the scraper fleet repladng topsoil.
Seedbed preparation by tillage will be considered in the following situations. Offset disking on the contour
will be used in areas where excessive surface compaction has occurred during topsoil replacement, where
surface roughness is too severe to complete seeding operations, or in cempaded non-topsoiled temporary
reclamation. In addition, areas with excessive weeds or undesirable vegetation growth may be controlled by
mechanipl tillage using offset disking on the contour. In shrub establishment areas, competing herbaceous
vegetation may be controlled or eliminated by contour disking operetions prior to shrub seeding or planting.
The shrub establishment areas will be idenffied in the field and tillage will be concluded a sufficlent number
of times during the growing season to control vegetation. -
Controlling weeds or other competing vegetation in seeding or shrub planting areas may also be cerried out
through the use of chemical herbicdes. Large scale use of herbicides is not being promoted; however, they •
have a high level 'of utility when controlling problem perennial weeds in permanent revegetation areas
requiring reseeding, or where surface stability in a shrub establishment area is critical. Any herbicides used
will be based on recommendations in the most current Colorado Weed Control Guide issued by the
Colorado State University Cooperative F~ktension Service. Prior to the application of any herbiclde, approval
of their use will be requested from CDMG. The herbicdes will be registered for the use intended and will be
applied by certified applicators with stdd adherence to the label. See Appendix 13-14, Weed Management
Plan, for additional information on the weed control program.
Seed Mixes and Plantino Lists. Two seed mixes have been developed far permanent revegetation.
Complimenting the seed mixes used in permanent revegetation are lists of tree and shrub seedlings to be
used in concentrated planting areas on the mine permit area. A shrub seeding list, temporary stabilization
mix, and a list of annual grains to be used for cover kxopping complete the lists of plant matedals to be used
in the various revegetation activities.
Initial considerations in the development of the pernaneM mixes and seedling lists included the antidpated
reclaimed area site conditions and the desired revegetation communities. Speclfic goals used to develop
the permanent seed mixes and seedling lists included rapid and long-term surface stabilization, ease of •
establishment, maximum use of native species, adequate species diversity, high levels of utility for livestock
TR-37 13-10 Revised 04/O5~
