ERO Resources
respectively. Other grasses that do occur but are of less i~ortancH are
• sixweeks fescue - O.lk, needle-and-thread grass - 0.1X and Sandberg
bluegrass - <O.1X (Figure 4, Table 61. Annual forbs are important to this
type with a mean value of 0.4X, The only perennial forb present in
wheatgrass sites sampled was globemallow with a mean value of 0.6z. Past
disturbances can be typified by the presence of cheatgrass and annual
forbs in relatively large amounts ac is shown in this type.
Shrubs occurring in the western wheatgrass type have a mean cover of
4.4k. Important shrubs include big sagebrush with a mean cover value of
0.4X and Gordon saltbush with a mean cover value of 3.5X. Other shrubs
that occur in this type include fourxing saltbush, little rabbitbrush and
spiTry horsebrush. Half-shrubs that occur are petradoria with a mean cover
of O.SZ and snakeweed with a cover of O.lX (Figure 4, Table 6). These
shrubs do not form a true synusia but occur instead as scattered
individuals.
Density values for shrubs in descending order for this type are Gordon
• saltbush - 11,925/Ha, fourwing saltbush - 300/Ha, big sagebrush - 187/Ha,
spiny horsebrush 62/Ha and little rabbitbrush ]2/Ha. For the
half-shrubs petradoria and snakeweed, density values are 475/Ha and
250/Ha, respectively (Table 7).
Primary productivity in the western wheatgrass type is the second highest
sampled with a mean production of 52.6 grams per square meter. Grasses
important to this type with their corresponding means are western
wheatgrasa - 35.8 g/m2, cheatgrass - 12.0 g/m2, Sandberg bluegrass -
<0.1 g/m2, needle and-thread grass - 0.1 g/m2 and six weeks fescue -
0.2 g/m2. The above grasses account for 92X of the overall primary
productivity. Annual forbs including stickseed averaged 2.5 g/m2
biomass. The only perennial forb of importance in this community type is
globemallow at an annual production rate of 1.6 g/m2. The half-shrub
snakeweed accounts for 0.3 g/m2 (Figure 5, Table 9).
•
II.F-41
