r
Sub-project D - 1978 grass and forbs direct seeded.
Methods
Thirteen grass species and 3 forb species were hand seeded June 22, 1978 on
the southwest tailing pond slope. The same proceedure were used as for
sub-project B on the top area. Plots were seeded across the slope in 20
foot rows. These plots were water and fertilized along with sub-project
C.
Results and Discussion
Fifteen of the sixteen species had some gerimation the first season. Table
1 gives a summary of evaluation for stand and vigor. Species showing
potential adaptation are: Arriba and Rosana, western wheatgrass; Sodar,
streambank wheatgrass and Magnar, basin wildrye. Arriba has been
exceptional in spreading by long vigorous rhizomes. All of the above four
species have set seed at this location. However, basin wildrye has not
spread from original stands. Initially A. elongatun and A. intermedium had
good stand, but had servere winter-kill after three years. This subproject
will continue and be evaluated in 1982.
