Sub-project B - 26 species direct seeded on Top Flat area
Methods
Twenty two grasses and 4 forbs were hand seeded June 22, 1978 on the flat
tailings area. A furrow was dug with a hoe and peat material placed in the
bottom. The seed was hand-planted in furrows which had been treated with the
above peat material. A small 3-inch (7.5 cm) furrow was dug and filled half
way with peat. One-half inch (1.25 cm) of sandy tailing material was placed
over it and seed drilled into the sand about one-half inch (1.25 cm) deep. The
area was water during each summer.
Results
The mountain bromegrass was the only species showing germination the first
season. However, seedlings died at about 1/2 inch height. The second spring
(1979) several grasses show some germination (10-50%) : Arriba and Rosana
western wheatgrass, Sodar streambank wheatgrass, basin wildrye, slender
wheatgrass and beardless wildrye. By the fall of 1979 all plants had died out
with very little growth and very poor vigor. It is assumed that the peat
material and tight soil condition was the problem preventing establishment.
Sub-project B is closed with this report.
Plant list on the above two sub-projects are abailable from the E.P.C.
