Project No. 7831
Silverton Standard Metals Field Evaluation Planting
Progress Report - February 1982
.Introduction
The site is located one mile east of Silverton on tailings pond number 2 at
9,700 feet (2910 m) elevation. The average daily high temperature for June,
July and Auguat is 70' and the average daily low for the same period is
32°F. The recorded average frost-free period is 24 days. The average
annual precipitation is 24 inches (60 cm) . However, evapotranspiration dur-
ing May, June, July and August is greater than the precipitation. Precipi-
tation during the same months are 1.4, 1 .6, 2.8 and 3.2 inches (3.5 cm, 1 .6 i
cm, 2.8 cm and 3.2 cm), respectively.
Evaporation rates on the site differ at the top of the tailings pond and on
the slopes, as reported by Standard Metals measurements. The maximum
measured on top was 0.54 inches (1.35 cm) in one day, compared to 0.25
inches (0.625 cm) on the tailing slope.
The Silverton, Standard Metals plots were started in 1978. Additional plots
were added in 1979, 1980, and 1981. This report contains information on the
1978 projects. Below is a outline of the different plots and will be used
for further reference in this write up.
Proj . Top of tailing: The top flat area in the heavier stratified materials.
This area is often saturated during winter and spring. These soils were
classified as clay to silty clay loams with 5.6 to 5.7 pH. Soils
analysis information is contained in table 1.
II. Tailings slope plots: This area represents the dikes and steep outside
Bout west acing s ope of the tailings. This material is fine grained
(sandy) and is highly suceptable to both water and water erosion. The
prelverized material is low in fertility but contain no appreciable
amounts of minerals which might be toxic to plant growth. The fine
sands have a 7.3 to 7.5 pH range and very rapid infleltration rate.
Soil analysis is contained in table 1.
