of the Soil Conservation Service was contacted for assis-
tance in acquiring additional plant materials for testing, and
a Field Evaluation planting site was established in 1978.
Test plot work was devoted primarily to the major disturbance
areas, since moderate and minor disturbance sites are much more
conducive to vegetative establishment by applied techniques as
well as natural invasion. Plant materials utilized in the revege-
tation test work were selected from species possessing qualities
considered to be essential for success. The selected species were
then tested in single species and mixed species plantings. Spe-
cific qualities selected for included:
Drought resistance
Cold tolerance
Winter hardiness
Vegetative and sexual reproductive rates
Nutrient assimilation
Toxicity tolerances
Competitiveness
Plant materials tested on the various plots were then evalu-
ated for revegetation potential based on vigor and vitality rat-
ings. The most attention was given to those species which dis-
played large ecologic amplitude, capable of desired results in a
number of microsites or habitats.
Floral species used or tested in the reclamation program at
the Silverton site over the past five years are presented in the
subsequent listings.
Page 8
