Water levels below Tailings Pond No. 3 were essentially constant
during 1987 . Well no. 7 shows a flat hydrograph, while well no. 4
was dry part of the year (Figures 3 and 4 , respec--ively) .
Wells used to illustrate water level fluctua-ions in Tailings
':e:ad No . 4 are located on Figure 5 . The water level in the north and
so--th ends of the embankment has risen since late 1986 to a peak in
july 1987 (Figures 6 and 7 , respectively) . The very high initial
Sept . 1986 water level at well no. 21 (Figure 7 ) resulted from the
close proximity of the cyclone during the well measurement. Since
juiy 1987 the water level in these areas has remained relatively
'zcnstant. In the central portion of the embankment the water level
has remained constant from late 1986 to early 19E -'- (Figure 8 ) .
Two hydrologic cross sections were constructer through the
em':)ankment ( see Figure 5 for locations ) to illustrate the
po-entiometric surface within the embankment and it' s relationship to
Colorado State Highway 110 (Figures 9 and 10 ) . r:th show that the
emankment is well drained and the water surface is at least ten feet
below the road surface.
Quality Water quality data are collected from both engineering
of---"ice settling pond wells. Water quality in the two wells is
essentially identical (Table 5) . EOMW-1 appears .o be a poorer
completion, resulting in more turbid waters during sampling. In the
fu.ure the well will be developed with a pump before sampling. Three
casing volumes were removed by bailer from each well before samples
were collected. Water type is again calcium sulfate with similar
dissolved metals and pH to the Animas River, as would be expected in
these coarse gravels within 100 feet of the river bank.
-23-
