and Grading (Section 2.05.4(2)(c)) and Facilities (Section 2.05.3) sections. The
erodibility of the respread topsoil is discussed in the Soil Survey (Section 2.04.9) and the
Revegetation (Section 2.05.4(2)(e)) sections.
The resultant loamy textured regraded Bench 1 Surface Spoil or free dig zone materials
will possess suitable physical qualities which are conducive to plant growth. The
available water holding capacity will likely be moderately low to moderate
(approximately 0.07 to 0.11 inches of water per inch of soil), permeability moderate to
moderately rapid (about 1.0 to 6.0 inches per hour), and cation exchange capacity low to
moderately low (5 to 10 milli - equivalents per 100 grams). Since the regraded spoil or
Bench 1 Surface Spoil or free dig zone materials will contain a mixture of soft, slightly
hard, hard, and extremely hard rock fragments, the spoil will generally possess acceptable
root growth and water holding characteristics.
The chemical properties of the weathered Bench 1 Surface Spoil or free dig zone
materials are quite favorable. Sodicity and salinity levels are low to moderate in the
NHN permit area and should not pose a severe problem to successful reclamation.
Salinity levels in the upper four feet of regraded Bench 1 Surface Spoil or free dig zone
materials will be comparable to pre- mining values. The replaced Bench 1 Surface Spoil
or free dig zone materials transition into the deeper portions of the rooting zone within
the permit area. All of this weathered overburden or Bench 1 Surface Spoil or free dig
zone material is suitable rooting zone material.
NHN Mine Topsoil Management Plan
The NHN Mine topsoil management plan, based upon the detailed soil survey contained
in Section 2.04.9, has been developed to insure that the most suitable topsoil materials
within the disturbance area are salvaged. The topsoil management plan evaluates the
topsoil resources and describes salvage depths and techniques, storage, redistribution, and
maintenance or testing procedures necessary to restore the disturbed areas to the desired
post -mine land use.
Section 2.05.4(2)(d) Page 7 January 2012
