GEOTECHNICAL STUDY:
Western Technolog i,es Irlc . , was contracted to perform a geotechnical
study of Tailings Pond No. 1 during late summer of 1991 . The study
included site inspection, drilling and sampling of borings on the
site, laboratory testing of subsurface materials and geotechnical
engineering analysis.
The engineering technical analysis consisted of performing site
stability analysis r the site as it exists and after
reconfiguration according to a preliminary plan developed by San
Juan County Mining Venture. The preliminary plan required
modification in the old failure area and these modifications (slope
flattening) have been incorporated into the submitted plan. The
following table lists factors of safety against failure as the pond
exists and as proposed in the reclamation plan with the exception
that the old failure area was reinforced after receipt of this
report to increase stability.
Cross Section Existing Proposed
Static Pseudo-Static Static Pseudo-Static
Old Failure Area 1 . 24 0 . 77 1 . 57 1 . 12
South of Old
Failure Area 1 . 19 0 . 95 1 .63 1 . 11
Area of Borings
9 and 10 1 . 42 1 . 14 1 . 74 1 . 34
The proposed reconfigured slopes will increase the factor of safety
against failure to minimum acceptable levels.
