TAILINGS POND #1
File No. M-77-378
RECLAMATION PLAN:
The ultimate goal of the reclamation plan for Tailings Pond #1 is
to increase site geotechnical stability to acceptable levels,
eliminate migration of tailings from surface erosion by wind and
water and establish a self sustaining vegetative cover on the pond.
The plan incorporates five steps to achieve this.
I . Resloping Sides of Pond
The side-slopes of the pond will be reconfigured to slopes
ranging from approximately 2 . 5 : 1 to approximately 6 . 8 : 1 with
the 2 . 5 : 1 slope being the most predominant. The selection of
slopes will be based on a geotechnical study of the pond by
Western Technologies, Inc. in 1991 . Slope reduction will be
accomplished either by cutting or filling various sections.
The slope encroaching on Hwy 110 will be moved back to give an
approximate 20 foot clearance between the pond and the highway
to give drainage ditch area for the highway and to protect Lh
toe of the pond from gouging by heavy equipment maintairiir,jr
the road.
II . Regrading Top of Pond:
The top of the pond will be sLopcE(3 ,.(- o-O,note drainage towards
the hillside and eliminate ponding of snowmelt and runoff
waters . An approximate 2% grade toward the hillside will be
the construction goal although depending on fill volume
available, several bench levels or steps might be required.
These benches or steps , if required, will have 2 . 5 : 1 or less
slope connections. The material for filling the interior pone
area will be made up of material generated by flattening tfi_,
side-slopes and any other material from the Sunnyside Mine
property approved by the Division (in the past or future) for
consolidation into the pond prior to reclamation .
III . Overburden Covering:
The entire pond area (approximately 27 acres) will be covered
with a layer of overburden. This layer will be a minimum of
12 inches thick but will range in thickness from 12 inches to
18 inches because, given the nature of the material , in order
to place a minimum of 12 inches the average thickness will
exceed this minimum.
The overburden will be borrowed from the designated borrow
northeast of Tailings Pond #4 . This area was approved as a
borrow source in TR11 and borders areas previously approved in
the Consolidated Permit and TR09.
