Dilution of seepage along such a route should be very adequate to dilute any high
sodium seep water.
In light of the SGC consultants report (M. Logsdon report) which recommends a mine pool pH of 8.5
or less, the target pH of the reservoir of 9-I0 seems high. However, Mr. Perino indicated that
Sunnyside's experience with water treatment shows that Zn precipitates most effectively above a pH
of 9.4, Thus, the target pH of 9-10 is understandable.
The target pH of the alkaline injection solution of 12 seems unachieveable if lime is used. However,
as the company intends to overdose the solution with lime, and assuming that good mixing will occur,
the excess lime should dissolve, and the target pH of the mixture should be achieved.
I am still awaiting a return call regarding the potential solubility of some of the metals, but favor
approving the application without comment. The addition of alkaline fluid to the mine pool can only
help neutralize the acid waters as long as good mixing occurs. If I learn anything that would affect
my interpretation, I will forward that to you.
cc; Bruce Hunphries
Wally Erickson
C:ISGCTR 19.REV
2
