Oehler :
Enclosed is a Technical Revision request for interception and
diversion of groundwater in Sunnyside Basin and a check for $150 to
cover the fee for reviewing the TR submittal .
The interception and diversion does not significantly change the
reclamation plan for Sunnyside Basin and if the groundwater is
diverted (from entering the Sunnyside Mine through the backfilled
Lake Emma hole on the rock-fill contact) , the flow path should be
similar to pre-Lake Emma collapse. The probable path before the
collapse was as groundwater feed to Lake Emma and then exit through
the outlet. It did not enter the Sunnyside Mine. The proposed
release point for the intercepted groundwater is the rock trench
which is the former outlet for Lake Emma (although this outlet has
been deepened) .
Please note that if interception is not successful (judged in the
field) , the existing reclamation plan stays in effect. All
trenches will be regraded to approximate existing contours (minus
material hauled to Sunnyside Pit for highwall reduction) . As
discussed in our 9/10/92 telephone conversation, the phase I
excavation has been completed although it has not been evaluated
for interception quantity or surface runoff flow potential to judge
if subsurface ( ie. drainage pipeline) diversion is the best option
or if an open ditch will be adequate.
Please contact me if you have any questions or if the submittal is
not adequate.
Sincerely,
Larry Perino
Superintendent-Technical Services
