San Juan County Mining Venture
Job No. 3121K073
SCOPE OF SERVICES
The scope of our services was to determine the stability of the
old failure area in its current configuration, provide analysis of
the present stability of Tailings Pond No. 1, and to analyze
stability for the proposed configuration planned during
reclamation. These plans entail reconstruction of the existing
slope on the tailings pond to 2 . 5 : 1 (horizontal to vertical) .
This will be accomplished by flattening the slope, moving material
downhill except where the road is next to the base of the slope.
Next to the road, existing materials will be removed from the face
of the pond to construct the proposed configuration. Tailings
excavated in this manner will be placed on the top surface of the
pond, or at other areas at the base.
The services provided by Western Technologies included:
o Field reconnaissance by engineering staff;
o Drilling and sampling of borings on the site;
o Laboratory testing of subsurface materials; and
o Geotechnical engineering analyses.
Ten borings were drilled at the tailings pond during the field
exploration of the site, to depths of 33 . 5 to 103 . 5 feet at the
approximate locations shown on the site plan. During exploration,
subsoils were visually examined and sampled at selected
intervals . Soil sampling consisted of standard penetration, Dames
and Moore ring samples, shelby tubes and bulk samples . Each test
boring was cased with field slotted 2 inch PVC pipe for
groundwater measurements .
The following laboratory tests were performed on selected soil
samples retrieved during the drilling operations :
-3-
