Supac nonwoven
geotextiles are manufacture from polypropylene fibers.
Polypropylene fabric are considered inert in soils within a 3 to 12
pH range. Polypropylene is unaffected by most alkalies and acids,
nor does it support growth of mildew or fungi.
Examples of field test reports are:
"Effects of Soil Burial Exposure on the Properties of Molded
Plastics: , R. J. Miner, Bell System Technical Journal, Jan.
1972 . Test started in 1956. Results in 1971 showed no
changes in polypropylene. Sites included Roswell, New Mexico,
pH range 5. 3-7.9. Note: The communications industry uses
polypropylene in soil burial applications.
"Long Term Insitu Properties of Geotextiles", Huffman &
Turgeon, Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation, Transportation
Research Board 1983. The conclusion to this report states:
"Engineering fabrics can be expected to effectively function
as a filter and separator in a drainage trench application for
years. The fabrics should be included as a standard part of
the drainage system design where open-graded aggregate
backfill requires protection from adjacent, low plasticity
fine soils that are prone to migrate. "
"Burial Test of Geotextiles", Textile Chemistry Division,
National Research Council of Canada, D. J. Carlson, Soil
Burial of Supac nonwoven polypropylene fabric showed no
significant changes after four years of burial.
'Trademark Phillips Petroleum Company
