analyses. The character of the overburden in the new permit area appears to be essentially the
same as that previously sampled.
Table 2.04.6 -3 is a comparison of selected parameters from overburden sample holes NHN11 -1,
NHN 11 -2, and NHN 11 -3 showing the difference between the weathered zone (free dig zone),
the unweathered zone, and the total overburden. This table shows that the weathered zone is the
most suitable material to cap the less suitable (or unsuitable) unweathered zone overburden and
interburden where the UD1 and the LD will both be mined. Mining at NHN will entail mining
the weathered, free dig material separately as suitable for reclamation and placing it on (or
capping) the unsuitable or unweathered material as a cap. This is the same procedure that is
currently being practiced at WFC's adjacent New Horizon Mine. Top soil would then be placed
on the graded surface of the backfill material as discussed in detail in Section 2.05.4(2)(d) of this
permit application.
While mostly meeting the suitability criteria the interburden will be placed in the lower portions
of the backfill and capped by the weathered material. The underburden will be left undisturbed
and will be left as the base of backfill. Any residue from recovering the overlying coal will
remain on top of the underburden or at the base of the backfill
Section 2.04.6 Page 9 April 2011
