INTRODUCTION
This cultural resource inventory report is submitted
in compliance with the stipulations of the National Historic
Preservation Act of 1966, the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969, Executive Order 11593 of 1971, and Office of
Surface Mining Regulations, Title 30 CFR, Part 700. It was
prepared under Bureau of Land Management Professional Services
Antiquities Permit No. 78 -00 -124 (expires January 15, 1980)
and the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado Archaeo-
logical Permit No. 79 -47 (expired December 31, 1979) by
Western Cultural Resource Management, Inc., at the request of
Peabody Coal Company to locate, identify, describe, and
evaluate the significance of all prehistoric and historic
cultural resources within the area of impact on approximately
100 acres to be potentially disturbed by surface coal mining.
On September 16, 1979, Michael S. Burney, Principal
Investigator for WCRM, Inc., and Marcus Grant, Staff Archaeo-
logist, performed a 100% pedestrian archaeological survey
(see Survey Procedures - Field Methodology for survey details)
of the Nucla Coal Mine owned by Peabody Coal Company. The
legal description of the Nucla Coal Mine study area is as
follows:
Nucla Coal Mine Study Area; Nucla,
Colorado Quadrangle, 7.5 Minute Series
(Topographic) 1960, Township 47N, Range
15W, Section 25, the SW k, Montrose
County, Colorado.
During this survey, two aboriginal open campsites were
located and recorded: Sites 5MN1257 and 5MN1258 (see Maps
2 and 3). Both sites contained ground and chipped stone arti-
facts, but no features such as rock alignments or fire hearths
were observed. The surface of Site 5MN1258 has been heavily
impacted by past cultivation and construction of a gravel
surfaced driveway (see Figure 5, page 35).
Site 5MN1257 has also been impacted by ground disturbance
from road construction, ranching, and farming activities
1
APR 9 19 $Q
