SURVEY PROCEDURES
Literature Search and Records Check
On August 21 and 22, 1979, Charles W. Wheeler, Staff
Archaeologist for WCRM, Inc., conducted an intensive literature
search and records check of the Office of the State Archaeo-
logist of Colorado (OSAC) and the Office of the State Historic
Preservation Officer (SHPO) to determine if there were
previously recorded cultural resources within or near the
study area. Three aboriginal lithic scatters were found to
be recorded north and northeast of the Nucla Mine study area
(Copeland: 1978). One of these sites, 5MN803, is dated at
ca. 1 AD to 200 AD. Due to the absence of diagnostic
artifacts, it is not possible to date the other two sites.
These latter two sites consisted of chipped stone only, while
the first site yielded both chipped and ground stone (see
Glossary). No architectural features were observed with these
three sites.
In addition, a file search of the Bureau of Land
Management Montrose Area Office in Montrose, Colorado,
was conducted by phone on September 25, 1979, by Michael S.
Burney. Doug Scott, the BLM District Archaeologist, reported
no aboriginal or Euroamerican sites had been previously recorded
for the study area (see Glossary for definitions of Euroamerican
and aboriginal artifacts). The Colorado Historical Society,
Department of Historic Preservation, lists no historic sites
within or immediately adjacent to the study area. In addition,
no prehistoric or historic sites were recorded for the study
area with OSAC.
Field Methodology
On September 16, 1979, Michael S. Burney, Principal
Investigator for Western Cultural Resource Management, Inc.,
and Marcus Grant, Staff Archaeologist, surveyed the 100 acres
of the Nucla Coal Mine on foot. The objective of this 100%
pedestrian survey was to locate all cultural resources potentially
5 APR 9 1980
