Backfill and grading accomplished to provide positive drainage. Outslope of <br /> pond embankments appeared stable and well vegetated. Vegetative cover appeared well established, dense <br /> and diverse. Transplanted aspen trees and willow bushes appeared to be surviving. Sediment containment <br /> ditches, located at toe of embankment outslopes, had been recently regraded and appeared stable and well <br /> maintained. <br /> Mayflower Pond 4 - Pond 4 remains active to receive sludge from the American Tunnel water treatment <br /> facility. Outslope of pond embankment appeared stable and well vegetated. Upland diversion ditches <br /> appeared clean, stable and well maintained. Sediment containment ditch, located at the toe of the <br /> embankment outslope had been recently regraded and appeared clean, stable and well maintained. Operator <br /> discussed permitting options for extending the upland diversion ditch off DMG permit area, due to compliance <br /> requirements with the Consent Degree and Order with WQCD. Stockpiles of overburden and topsoil, for <br /> reclamation purposes, appeared stable. However, Canada thistle and Dalmation toad flax were observed on <br /> the stockpiled material, see enclosed DMG 7/17/98 Weed Control Policy. <br /> Pride of the West Tailings Pond MRP - Pre-law tailings removal project was completed in 10/97. Reclaimed <br /> areas appeared stable and well vegetated. Vegetative cover included various wheatgrasses, brome, Timothy, <br /> Foxtail and various swamp grasses thriving in the constructed wetlands area. Straw bale sediment filters were <br /> intact at several locations of the constructed wetlands area. Straw bales had also been scattered in portions <br /> of the wetlands area. Grasses were sprouting from the straw bales in the wetland areas. Transplanted Blue <br /> spruce, Limber pine and Ponderosa pine appeared to be surviving. Transplanted willow bushes did not appear <br /> to be thriving. <br /> Ransom Portal MRP - Concrete bulkhead and portal backfill was completed during construction season 1997. <br /> Slope of backfilled portal blended with natural grade and coloration. Precise location of previous portal was <br /> difficult to determine. Backfilled slope appeared stable, evidence of slumping, settling or excessive erosion <br /> was not observed. <br /> Eureka Tailings MRP- Pre-law tailings removal, and backf ill, grading, seeding and transplanting of trees and <br /> shrubs, for disturbed areas, was completed during construction season 1997. Animas River channel did not <br /> appear to have been impacted by tailings removal project.
