OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M- 2007 -076
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: TCW
INSPECTION DATE: August 8, 2012
This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by TC Wait of DRMS. Mr. Jerry Hoss from Cheyenne
County represented the operator during the site visit. The site is located about 2.5 miles north of Arapahoe
along the Smokey Hill River. Post -mine land use for this site is pastureland. The permit area is approximately
7.24 acres; about 2 /3rds of the permit appears to have been mined at this point.
At the time of the inspection, the site was damp from a rain storm the day prior. There was no ponding in the
pit, but the pit slopes were rilled and there was evidence of sediment transport into the pit from the sides of
the pit. The permit sign was posted, and the permit boundaries were marked with survey pins. Mr. Hoss
explained that it was difficult to keep posts up because the property owner allows cattle on the land and they
knock the posts down. All mining activity appears to be within the marked boundaries.
The topsoil stockpiles are located on the west and east sides of the pit. The topsoil appears stable with sparse
volunteer vegetation growth. A small stockpile of material was located on the south side of the pit. It had
been recently moved. Mr. Hoss estimated about 3150 -3675 cubic yards of material are removed from this pit
in an average year.
Mining is moving southward and the northern part of the pit is about at its maximum in order to effectively
regrade. Mr. Hoss said he hopes to grade the northern part of the pit in order to spread top soil and seed it
soon.
No problems were noted during the inspection.
