GB /JWB/LCC <br />06/2002 <br />WILEY SERIES <br />The Wiley series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils formed in thick, <br />calcareous loess. Wiley soils are on hills, plains, ridges, terraces, and valley side slopes. Slopes range from 0 to <br />20 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 15 inches and mean annual temperature is about 52 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine -silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Aridic Haplustalfs <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Wiley silt loam - grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted). <br />Ap- -O to 4 inches; brown (I OYR 5/3) silt loam, dark brown (I OYR 3/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; <br />soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth <br />boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick) <br />Bt - -4 to 10 inches; brown (1 OYR 5/3) silty clay loam, brown (1 OYR 4/3) moist; moderate medium subangular <br />blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few faint clay films on faces of peds; slightly <br />effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 11 inches thick) <br />Btk - -10 to 18 inches; pale brown (1 OYR 6/3) silty clay loam, brown (1 OYR 4/3) moist; moderate medium <br />subangular blocky structure; hard , firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few faint clay fihrn on faces of <br />peds; few medium masses of calcium carbonate; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth <br />boundary. (8 to 24 inches thick) <br />BCk - -18 to 23 inches; pale brown (1 OYR 6/3) silty clay loam, brown (1 OYR 5/3) moist; weak medium <br />subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common. medium masses of <br />calcium carbonate; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick) <br />C - -23 to 60 inches; light yellowish brown (1 OYR 6/4) silt loam, brown (1 OYR 5/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, <br />very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline. <br />TYPE LOCATION: Lincoln.
