HISTORY
May 30, 2012
Tom Kaldenbach
Environmental Projection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Notice of 112 Construction Material Reclamation Permit Application Consideration Tamrock Gravel, Shot
Rock Pit, File No. M- 2012 -023 (CHS #62115)
Dear Mr. Kaldenbach:
Thank you for your correspondence dated May 22, 2012 (received by our office on May 24, 2012) regarding the
subject project.
A search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory database indicates that no cultural resource inventory has
taken place within the proposed permit area nor have historic properties been recorded therein. However, a
survey was completed nearly 35 -years ago immediately north of the proposed gravel pit by the University of
Northern Colorado. This 160 -acre survey of the northeast - quarter of Section 3, Township 33S, Range 65W
documented ten archaeological sites (corresponding to 5LA1622, 5LA1629, 5LA1641, and 5LA1643 through
5LA1649). Identified resources represent sparse lithic concentrations, lithic procurement sites, and open
campsites and all are currently on file as requiring additional information ( "need data ") prior to making a final
eligibility determination to the National Register of Historic Places. Also located in close - proximity to the
proposed gravel pit is a multi- roomed habitation structure (site 5LA1480) known as the Running Pit House Site.
An extensive cultural assemblage was identified during site excavation by Trinidad State Junior College in the
mid- 1950s. Taken together, these resources provide important data regarding Native American land use
practices and suggest (based on similarities in landform and resource availability) that the project area may
contain comparable resource types. An additional cultural resources survey would be necessary to adequately
identify, record, and assess additional properties that may be located within the proposed project area to
determine National Register of Historic Places eligibility.
Please remember that our files contain incomplete information for this area, as most of Colorado has not yet
been inventoried for cultural resources. As a result, there is the possibility that as yet unidentified cultural
resources exist within the proposed permit area. Should human remains be discovered during mining activities,
the requirements under State law CRS 24 -80 part 13 apply and must be followed.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. If we may be of further assistance, please contact Mark Tobias,
Section 106 Compliance Manager, at (303) 866 -4674 or i-nark.tobiasQstate.co.us.
Si cerely,
----ate
dward C.
