August 1, 2011 C- 1981 - 037 /GEC Strip Mine JHB
Herbaceous vegetation data was collected on 28 transects. Transect length was 50 M long. Ten observation points
were collected along each transect, using the 10 -pt. laser point bar, every 10 meters resulting in 50 observation
points per transects. The first object that each laser intercepted was recorded by plant species, litter, rock or bare
ground. Only live plants contributed to the cover value.
Productivity quadrats were collected concurrently with the cover transects. Quadrat size was 1/4 M2 (0.5 M X 0.5
M). 38 Quadrats were collected. Live herbaceous vegetative cover was clipped to just above the plant crown.
Only vegetation that fell within the quadrat boundary was clipped. Woody species, succulents, and noxious
species were not collected. Litter was not included in the production measurements. All collected life forms,
perennial grasses, perennial forbs, annual /biennial forbs, and annual grasses, were combined into one sample per
quadrat. Bags of clipped vegetation were dried at 110 degrees for 48 hours, then weighted to determine dry
biomass.
Areas were sampled in two Logical management units: Chen's Hill, East and West Pits comprised one LMU,
while the Orphan pit and areas located north of Fremont County Road were sampled as a second LMU.
OSM representatives collected plant reflectance data to potentially correlate satellite data with ground truthed
cover data. OSM's data collection was independent of the Division's. However, the Division's results would be
used to callibrate the OSM's reflectance results.
SLIDES and DAMAGE - Rule 4.12:
Gullies on the reclaimed areas are discussed in the Reclamation portion of this report.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED
OTHER (SPECIFY)
ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS /COMPLIANCE
The GEC permit was previously revoked. All reclamation bond monies have been exhausted on
reclamation activities on the site. No bond monies remain for this site.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 4 of 7
