Stark
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine; Permit No. C- 1980 -007;
Minor Revision No. MR -386, New BCN Well
Dear Mr. Stark:
Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) submits this letter, application form, and drill pad
drawing in application of Minor Revision No. MR -386 for a new well on the same pad and
location as the small diameter Box Canyon North monitoring well approved and installed in
October 2008 (see technical revision TR -113). The existing well was damaged last year by
the landslide north of the RPEE haul road. MCC plans to install a 16" diameter steel- cased,
fully- grouted well next to the damaged well that is large enough to accommodate a water
pump so that the stored water in the mine can be pumped and used (in accordance with
MCC's adjudicated water rights) as needed.
The plan for drilling will be similar to that approved in TR -113 except that the existing pad,
located east of the RPE pond, would be widened by about 25' (to 75') for the drilling
operations, including a temporary mud pit. Subsequent to drilling, the mud pit will be drained
and filled, and the pad surface regraded, seeded and mulched.
Please contact me at (970) 929 -2238 or by e-mail should you have questions regarding this
submittal.
Sincerely,
Kathleen G.
