West Elk Mine 2011 Annual Hydrology Report 28
3.2.1.5 Spring 27 -1
Spring 27 -1 is located in upper Sylvester Gulch, which is tributary to the North
Fork of the Gunnison River, (Map 2) and feeds an area known as "twin ponds ". This
spring issues from alluvial sediments and is located above the south side of B -seam
longwall panel 15 (Box Canyon B -seam longwall panel area). Hydrologic monitoring
measurements from this station are taken at the end of a plastic drain pipe. Monitoring at
this spring began in 1996.
3.2.1.6 Spring G -7
Spring G -7 is located in a western tributary of Sylvester Gulch and is situated
south of the Northeast B -seam longwall panel area and north of the Southeast B -seam
panel area (Map 2). This spring issues from joints in a sandstone ledge and has perennial
flow, but shows strong seasonal variations with high flows in the spring months.
Monitoring at this spring began in 1977.
3.2.1.7 Spring G -16
Spring G -16 is located in Sylvester Gulch east of the Northeast longwall panel
area (Map 2). This spring issues from a sandstone bed above the F -seam and flows
seasonally. It is typically dry in the late summer and fall. Monitoring at this spring
began in 1979.
3.2.1.8 Spring G -24 (Decreed Spring #8)
Spring G -24 is located in Sylvester Gulch east of the Northeast B -seam longwall
panel area (Map 2). This spring issues from alluvium and is measured at the outflow of a
plastic drainage pipe. It flows seasonally and flow diminishes in late summer and
autumn. Monitoring at this spring began in 1979.
3.2.1.9 Spring G -14 (Decreed Spring #7)
Spring G -14 is located in Sylvester Gulch east of the Northeast B -seam longwall
panel area (Map 2). This spring issues from fractures in the base of a sandstone bed. It
flows seasonally and flow diminishes in late summer and autumn. Monitoring at this
spring began in 1977.
June 2012 HydroGeo, Inc.
