January 1997 Monthly Report
Page 2
- Columbus Mine Portals - Mine Waste Dumps
This is a "B List" project. Therefore, no work, permitting or
arrangement for access is planned until it becomes evident
that the work plan for this project requires implementation.
- Surface Mill Tailings at Eureka
No work was done on this project in January, 1997 due to snow-
cover.
A time extension request was submitted to the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers for the Section 404 Permit held for
implememtation of this project in case additional work is
needed. The original 404 Permit expired in January. The
determination on whether additional work is required will be
made after snow clears and a inspection can be made in the
spring.
- Gold Prince - Mill Tailings
No work was done on this project in January due to snow-cover
and loss of access for the winter.
The amended work plan will become effective in February, 1997.
Implementation of this amended work plan is planned for the
1997 construction season.
Longfellow - Koehler Mine Waste Project
During the month of January, an additional 8649 cubic yards
were excavated and hauled from the Koehler waste dump to
Sunnyside Gold Corporation's Tailings Pond #4. This brings
the total yardage removed from this dump to 23 ,649 cubic
yards. The lower portion of this dump was relatively dry and
decomposition due to acid generation was not as prevalant as
near the surface. Rock composition appeared to contain less
mineralization due to the unmineralized nature of the adit x-
cut. A red precipitate layer was observed to cover the area
of the red pond and extend under the dump. This precipitate
was sampled and sent out for analysis. This layer appears to
be pre-dump which might indicate that precipitation of
dissolved minerals was occuring before the waste dump was
placed.
Underground water sources were sampled in January. These
results are attached.
A request for time extension was submitted to the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers for the Section 404 Permit held for
implementation of this project. This permit expired in
January.
