August 1996 Monthly Report
Page 2
- Columbus Mine Portals - Mine Waste Dumps
This is a "B" list project and work on it is being deferred
pending results from implemtation of the "A" list projects.
- Surface Mill Tailings at Eureka
Implementation of the work plan for this site continued
throughout the month of August. Through the end of August, a
total of 36,043 cubic yards has been removed from the site and
consolidated into the Mayflower Tailings Pond #4. The majority
of this material has been removed from the large pond on the
west side of the Animas River although a second excavator was
moved to the site on August 8th. This second excavator has
been used to remove the small surface tailings piles located
between the County Road the Animas River.
At the consolidation site, Mayflower Tailings Pond #4,
quicklime kiln dust and hydrated lime has been added to the
deposited material to stabilize the pH. Through the end of
August approximately 60 tons of this alkaline material has
been added. The removed tailings pH averages 5.7 at the site
before alkaline material addition for neutralization upon
placement in Tailings Pond #4.
- Gold Prince - Mill Tailings
Designs were prepared for the tunnel bulkheads to be installed
at this site. Mr. John F. Abel , Jr. PE was contracted to;
examine the tunnel, determine if the potential sites selected
by SGC would serve the intended purpose, if two bulkheads were
actually required for the installation and to submit design(s)
for construction. Mr. Abel was also the design engineer for
the Sunnyside Mine bulkheads. These designs were completed
and submitted to SGC and later submitted to CDPHE and DMG with
submittal letters dated September 3 , 1996.
A Section 404 Permit was obtained for implementation of the
work plan to consolidate and isolate surface mill tailings and
mine waste from contact with water. This permit was granted
subject to obtaining all necessary approvals to implement the
project.
A San Juan County Land Use Permit has not been obtained for
implementation of the surface remediation contained in the
work plan due to County concerns that site remediation
according to the work plan will destroy historical and
cultural assets at the site. SGC is continuing to try and
resolve these concerns.
