- II I I II I II I II IIII III
999
\ DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
U.S.ARMY ENGINEER DISTRICT,SACRAMENTO
CORPS OF ENGINEERS
1325 J STREET
SACRAMENTO,CALIFORNIA 95814-2922
REPLY TO
ATTENTION OF August 7, 1996
Regulatory Branch (199675353)
Mr. Larry Perino
Sunnyside Gold Corporation
Post Office Box 177
Silverton, Colorado 81433
Dear Mr. Perino:
I am responding to your request for a Department of the Army
permit to discharge material into a headwater stream. The project
is located at Placer Gulch at latitude 37 degrees 55 minutes, and
longitude 107 degrees 36 minutes in San Juan County, Colorado.
The project consists of consolidating hard rock mining
tailings from upland and wet areas into a confined and stabilized
location. The resulting consolidated material will be protected
from leaching contaminating materials into the surface and
groundwater system. Approximately 0 . 7 acre of waters of the
United States will be temporarily impacted by the removal of
contaminated tailings . The surface flows will be restored after
cleanup, and the associated fringe wetland vegetation is expected
to return in a cleaner environment .
The Chief of Engineers has issued nationwide general permit
number 26 which authorizes the discharge of dredged or fill
material in waters of the United States for headwaters
discharges . Your project can be constructed under this authority
provided the work meets the conditions listed on the enclosed
information sheets and the special conditions listed below:
1 . This permit requires that all other required authorizations
must be obtained by the applicant prior to commencement of work.
2 . Wetlands and wet areas outside of the immediate work area
shall be visibly marked to prevent equipment from disturbing
them, and to prevent their use for parking or temporary storage .
3 . The construction workers shall be instructed about the
requirement to avoid impacting areas not specifically authorized
by this permit .
This permit verification will be valid until January 21,
1997 . You should contact this office if work will extend beyond
this date .
