sun-colored amethyst liquor bottles surrounding the feature.
Ecture 10-C011aycd Wood Frame B Wding
This feature is the collapsed remains of a wood frame structure located on the north edge
of the site (Figure 5). The structure has completely collapsed so getting exact measurements is
somewhat difficult. The structure covers an area approximately 30 ft long and 20 ft wide.
Evidence of the roof decking configuration suggests the structure collapsed in place. The structure
was sided and decked with 1 by 8 inch milled lumber. The roof was a mix of shake shingles
covered with corrugated tin in places. Evidence of 2 by 6 inch framing timbers was also noted
The function of this structure is not known but it can be seen in place to the west of the
boardinghouse in a 1907 photograph of the site area(Figure 4). This wood frame structure ma
have been a mine supervisors residence or some other facility. A pile of large 1 ft thick and y
several feet long structural timbers are located adjacent to the collapsed structure and appear to
fepresent structural members salvaged from other structures at the site(such as the Hanson Mill)
and piled in the area.
Enture 11-Bridge
This feature is a wooden bridge located adjacent to Placer Creek in the northeast corner of
the site(Figure 5). The bridge measures 10 ft wide and 30 ft long and is constructed of 2 by 8 and
2 by 12 inch lumber. The bridge covered a small drainage that crosses through the mill site and
feeds back into Placer Creek. This small drainage may have been diverted to supply water to the
mill for use in the steam plant.
Foturc 12-Aerial Tram Tower
This structure is an aerial tram tower located adjacent to the boardinghouse(Feature 7)on
the northern edge of the site(Figure 5). The feature measures 25 ft long and 15 wide and is
approximately 20 ft tall. The tower was constructed in a A-frame configuration of 8 by 8 in
lumber held together with large bolts (Figure 10) . A support cable extends from the tower to the
west to the cast side of the boardinghouse. A 25 ft long by 4 ft wide causeway leads from the
tower to the boardinghouse(Feature 7). The tower is part of the Gold Prince Aerial tramway
described earlier in this report and in use from 1906-1917. It is depicted in a 1907 photograph of
the site (Figure 4).
Feature 13-Building Rem in Qa y Office l
This feature is a leveled and cleared area with a cellar located in the northwestern corner of
the site(Figure 5). The cleared area measures 75 ft long(east-west)by 35 ft wide(north-south).
In the center is 10 ft square excavated area that is 3-4 ft deep and appears to represent a cellar. No
remains of the superstructure are present but there is a distinct scatter of artifacts associated with
the area. Square cut nails were present suggesting parts of this structure may have dated to the
earlier history of the site(1890s and earlier). Artifacts scattered around the feature included
domestic looking refuse such as ceramic tableware fragments, and liquor bottle fragments, but
there are also some very unique artifacts. These unique artifacts include over 100 small 1 inch
diameter plaster buttons or plugs that are concave, and several fragments of earthenware crucibles.
These artifacts appear to define assaying activities, and it is suggested that this feature was the
20
