TAB R 1-FE_A TUR F T iST
Eeture Number Feature Descriplion
15 Iviill remnants-machinery mounts and leveled area
16 Privy-Excavated by bottle hunters
17 Hidden around boardinghouse
Loun 1-Portah
This feature is the 8 ft high by 6 ft wide portal opening for the Gold Prince Mine located at
the south edge of the site(Figure 5). The feature has been recently reopened and the entrance
fenced in preparation of the mine for permanent closing by Sunnyside Gold Co
6). The portal is located on the slopeat the south Corporation(Figure
edge of the site and is associated with a tram
load-out feature. A two track gravel road extends to within 12 ft of the o
in heavy use by recreational 'e traffic. Pegg, and is currently
jeep Maps on file with the Sunnysidc Gold Corporation show
the extent of thus underground workings from 1929, 1947, and 1951. The extent of the
underground workings arc not considered in this evaluation, but information regarding them is
available. This was a well worked mine that was periodically worked from the 1880s to 1950s, so
there are many thousands of feet of tunnels and shafts present.
This feature is the remains of the Gold Prince aerial tram load-out that was the terminal
end of tram way that originated at the large Gold Prince Mill in Animas Forks. The facility is
located 30 ft north of the Gold Prince Mine portal on a north facing slope at the south end of the
site(Figure 5). Ore from the mine was moved by ore cart to the aerial tram and to
within the site to the north. This facilitymay have on milling facilities
Y originally operated to transport ore from the
mine to the milling facility directly below. The structure is presently in ruins and covers an area
100 ft long and 50 ft wide(Figure 7). The original aerial tram load out structure is visible in two
historic photographs of the mine from 1907, and reproduced in The Rainbow Route(Sloan and
Skowronski 1975 pp 228-229). The structure was wood frame with a corrugated tin roof This
structure was completely dismantled when the aerial tram was removed in the late 19oo During
What appears to be the 19503 mining activities at the site the remains of this structure were heavily
modified for what appears to be remodeling for use as a truck to
used in this modification, and there is also newer milled lumber int g ng area The IntConcreegrity
block was
original use of the structure has been so seriouslycompromised ' The intgrity of the
remains.
promised that none of the original structure
FCaturc -Blllding ing
This feature is the remains of a building including an area of floor joists set on granite
bedrock, and a cellar or privy area on the east edge of the site(Figure 5). The floor joists measure
2 X 8 inches and cover an area 20 ft long and 15 wide. An excavated area adjacent to the floor
joists is 10 ft square and 3-4 ft deep and appears to represent either a cellar or
privy. The exact
fimction of the building that was located here is not known, but there is a small wood frame
structure depicted in a 1907 photograph(Figure 4)of the area. In this photograph the structure is
covering the excavated area, suggesting this area was a cellar or privy within the building.
14
