Box 466
Silverton , Colorado 81433
970 - 387 - 5772 -Fax 970 - 387 -5019
The Eureka Gavel Pit M- 1990 -070 in San Juan County is and has been an
"inactive" mining gravel operation and some reclamation and safety measures
have been done at the pit site. The County is stockpiling gravel at the Eureka pit
that is being hauled in from the new private gravel operation two miles west of
Eureka. There has been NO mining activity at this site in 2011 and there will be
no mining in 2012 or in the foreseeable future. San Juan County needs to get
released from liability and drop the permit in 2012.
There has been some minor sloughing on the slope above the pit and that was
caused by the winter avalanche and spring snow melt and also from the dumping
of materials off of county road #25. There was a small mudslide on CR -25 last
summer but did not affect the road or slope probably a 1000 tons of scree and
rock was pushed over the edge too widen and clear CR -25.
San Juan County has meet most requirements set forth by the board and
recommendations by the Minerals and Geology inspector. The County has done
the following steps to meet the MLRB requirements since 2004.
1. A catchment trench and berm was dug and constructed at the base of the
excavated slope in September of 2005.
2. Keep County road #25 widened out and two lane wide above the old pit
area. This takes place about twice a year or more depending on rain and
hail storms.
Louis Girodo
San Juan County Road Overseer
