Introduction
The information assembled in this 2011 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR)
includes data collected from approved monitoring sites established at
Seneca Coal Company's (SCC) Seneca II Mine (State Permit No. C -80 -005).
Locations of monitoring sites discussed in this report can be found by
referring to Exhibit 7 -2, Hydrology Monitoring Site Location Map, which
may be found in the Seneca II Permit Application Package (PAP). In
addition, NPDES ponds, surface water sites and spoil springs are located
in Figures 1 and 2, Appendix A. A map of ground water monitor wells may
be found in Figure 3. All references to 2011, or to "this year ", will be
for Water Year 2010 (October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011) unless
otherwise noted. All tables referred to in the following text can be
found in Appendix A. In addition, a table of contents for Appendix A is
given at the beginning of that appendix. The last of the coal at this
mine was removed in August 1999.
A new mine has been created in a large part of the 2009 Seneca II Mine
permit area. This new mine, the Peabody Sage Creek Mine (PSCM, State
Permit No. C- 2009 -087) now includes the NPDES Ponds 002, 003 and 004
drainage basins. The mining permit for the PSCM was approved by the
CDRMS in May 2010. This AHR will discuss monitoring sites that are
specific to the new (PR -02, approved December 2010) Seneca II Mine
hydrology program. Those include all sites in the NPDES Pond 008 basin,
as well as the sites on Fish Creek. A discussion of this year's data
from the hydrology monitoring sites associated with the old (pre -
December 2010) Seneca II Mine hydrology program may be found in the PSCM
2011 AHR.
Field conductivity and pH meters are calibrated prior to each day's use.
The conductivity meter is calibrated using a potassium chloride solution
with an electrical conductivity in the 1000 to 3000 umhos /cm range. The
pH meter is calibrated using NBS traceable buffers with pH values of 7
and 10. Prior to October 1, ,1989, all field conductivity values
collected at Seneca II monitoring sites were not corrected for
temperature (i.e., 25° C) . Field conductivity data starting on October
1
