Box 177
Silverton, Colorado 81433
Attention: Mr. Larry Perino
Re: Selection of Valve for American Tunnel Closure
The following comments confirm our discussion on March 16, 1995
regarding evaluation of two offerings for the subject 316 ss, hand operated, gate
valve.
1. Two offerings were reviewed:
Intermountain Piping Systems--Aloyco (Walworh Co.) valve
Crow Company--FNW valve
2. The Aloyco valve weighs approximately 470 Ibs more than the FNW valve.
3. Both Valves meet required code.
4. The FNW valve body is of lighter construction which may lead to greater
deformation under stress. This could cause difficulty in opening or closing the
valve after a prolonged period without operation.
5. The FNW valve has a much shorter stem with less support and less packing
and no packing lubrication provision. This also could contribute to difficulty in
operation of the valve after a prolonged period without operation.
6. Based on the information available, the Aloyco valve would clearly be the better
choice for a long term application where dependability is of great importance.
Respectf Ily,
St phen C. a n, P.E.
