Telecopy (303) 387 -5310 <br />Allen Sorenson, Reclamation Specialist <br />Department of Natural Resources <br />Division of Minerals and Geology <br />1313 Sherman Street, Room 215 <br />Denver, CO 80203 <br />Dear Mr. Sorenson: <br />March 15, 1996 <br />E C;E1 <br />i41 R 1 I 1 <br />8 . q9F� <br />Division of M eras <br />This letter report is to provide certification that construction of <br />the American Tunnel Bulkhead meets or exceeds design criteria. <br />Certification is required by the April 15, 1993 DMG adequacy <br />concern letter (Item 4) and was committed to by SGC. <br />The construction stages requiring certification are listed below. <br />4a) Bulkhead location preparation (scaling and washing). <br />The bulkhead site was scaled clean of loose material and <br />sandblasted to remove any surface coating that may have been <br />present. It was then washed down and vacuumed clean of water, <br />sand and rock residue. <br />This stage of site preparation was adequate to maximize the <br />potential for bonding between the rock and concrete bulkhead. <br />This stage of site preparation was also inspected by the <br />design engineer, John F. Abel, Jr., P.E. (see attached letter <br />report) before the pour and by DMG during a pre -pour <br />inspection on 06/28/95. <br />4b) Laying of by -pass or diversion pipe. <br />The original design specified 12" diameter schedule 40 steel <br />pipe with shear studs welded to it at specified intervals. In <br />addition, a 1" diameter Schedule 40 steel pipe with standard <br />threaded couplings was to be placed in the bulkhead to <br />facilitate measurements of hydraulic pressure behind the <br />bulkhead. <br />111 in <br />
