26 to a new bridge across Sneffels Creek to reach the Atlas Pile. This pile has no threat of
avalanches due to the terrain above it. No avalanche has been seen there in over 100 years.
A shallow piezometer will be placed on the north (downhill side) of each tailings pile as shown on
Map C -3. These piezometers will initially be sampled quarterly for field parameters of temperature,
pH, conductivity and water level. Additionally, samples of water from the piezometers will be
tested with full suite analysis using the same parameters of the ground water suite for all recent
samples will be conducted every 6 months. The results of these tests and their evaluation will be
incorporated in the DRMS Annual Report. Also, sample test data from any sediment pond
discharges will be evaluated in the Annual Report.
If, during any sample of pond discharge or piezometer, a low pH is detected or any other issue is
found, the Division will be immediately notified.
All of these steps will ensure that the tailings placed on site will be inert and will be reclaimed to a
stable condition that will never have any problems once the mine is reclaimed.
b) Waste Rock
Waste rock currently exists at the Revenue Pile from driving the Revenue Tunnel (and other side
tunnels) over 100 years ago in the inert host rock (andesite) in order to access the veins.
Additionally, it is expected that new waste rock will be produced at the rate of approximately
20,000 tons per year. It will be blasted rock of approximately minus 8" in size. This material should
be completely inert, since it will have no vein material. Waste rock will be brought out by small
mine cars on track to just outside the Revenue Tunnel. Due to the high demand for construction
materials in the area and the expressed desire of Ouray County to purchase this material, much of it,
if not all of it, will be crushed to a size of minus 1 5 inches and sold (or given away) from the site.
Some of the material may be incorporated into the waste piles and combined with tailings in the
two permanent piles. This waste rock for permanent placement will also be crushed to minus 1.5
Revenue Mine August 2012 T -14
