3.2 Current Conditions of Ground Water and Quality <br />Map C -5 shows all the main extensions of the Revenue Tunnel and the lateral drifts off this Tunnel. <br />The majority of water emanating from the Revenue Tunnel originates from water infiltrating in <br />fractures from the old workings (Monogahela) northwest of the Virginius #1 shaft. The Atlas drift <br />branches off from Revenue main drift at 3700' from the portal. This Atlas drift intercepts the Atlas <br />vein, and water seeping from this vein contributes a minimum of 20 gpm to the main flow of the <br />Revenue Drift. This is different from the Atlas Mine, which is located 250' above the Revenue <br />tunnel level. The Yellow Rose drift is close to the portal and also contributes a small amount of <br />water with good quality. <br />There are a few dripping spots along the Revenue Drift, but the locations described above account <br />for the vast amount of water leaving the portal. Considerable water data from the past is available <br />from previous operators who were active at the Revenue Mine and it appears that the flow varies <br />seasonally from approximately 200 gallons per minute up to 1000 gallons per minute in heavy snow <br />years. Past sampling of the water as it exits the Revenue Tunnel is given in Appendix 3. Included <br />in this appendix are WET tests that showed a passing grade for the mine water. The pH is normal <br />and dissolved solids are also relatively low. Zinc is slightly high when compared to the potential <br />standard that may be imposed as part of the NPDES discharge permit. Until the actual discharge <br />permit standards are determined, it is unknown whether zinc will be in exceedance. For the <br />purposes of planning, SMO is assuming that the zinc levels will need to be lowered before <br />discharge. The mine water currently enters the Revenue Pond. <br />A sampling program was initiated in the fall of 2011. Two sample sets have been taken with a full <br />suite of parameters. The parameter list was developed with DRMS as part of the pre -mine sampling <br />program. The underground water samples include only dissolved ions, while surface water samples <br />include all dissolved ions as well as total (including solids). <br />The monitoring of the ground water regime at the Revenue Mine will be via four underground (UG) <br />water sample points. They are all shown on Map C -5 and Map G -1, and described below. <br />Revenue Mine August 2012 G -7 <br />
