• 2.05.3(2)
Barrier pillars are blocks of coal which are deliberately not
extracted during the mining process in order to provide protection
or support to the mine entries or reserves. The Mine Plan includes
several barrier pillar types. They are as follows:
Main Entry Barrier Pillars. These main entry barrier pillars will
be located on each side of the main entries to provide the
necessary support to keep the main entries open for the life of the
operation.
Panel Pillars. These pillars act as a partition to separate mine
panels. After a panel has been mined out its entries are sealed
and the combination of the seals and the panel pillars completely
isolate the mined out panel from the remainder of the mine.
The portals of the Bear No. 3 Mine are located at the outcrop of
the C -Seam. The portals have an equipment roadway and intake entry
which are common entries, a belt entry, and a ventilation return
entry. The ventilation return portal entry is where the mine
• ventilation fan is located.
Mining Sequence Description
•
Actual mining and development work for the Bear No. 3 Mine began
following approval by the Division and OSM in early 1982.
In 1982, a gob disposal area was established within the old works
of the C -Seam near the first east panel. This gob area was
established to dump rock and waste material cleaned up in the old
entries of the Edwards Mine and also for other development work,
gob work, etc., that may have to be accomplished during the life of
the mine. The location of this waste disposal area is shown on the
C -Seam Mine Plan Map (Map 9).
Mining in the C -Seam was complete in mid 1989. Access to the B-
Seam was accomplished by the use of two rock slopes and a
ventilation opening developed from the C -Seam to the B -Seam to
allow men, materials, and coal to be transported underground with
little or no additional disturbance.
2.05 -6 Rev. 11 -30 -93
