BOX 177 Michael B Long
Division Director
Silverton, CO 81433
RE: Cement Creek Conjunctive Flow Characterization, Sunnyside Mine,
Permit No. M-77-378
1/
Dear Mr. Perino:
The Division has completed a review of the above referenced study prepared by Golder
Associates and submitted by Sunnyside Gold to satisfy Commitment #4 associated with
the approval of Technical Revision TR-014. It is the Division's finding, that based
on the results of the Golder Associates study, the groundwater component of the
conjunctive flow in Cement Creek in the vicinity of monitoring station CC-1 is
insignificant in terms of monitoring for increased flow volumes in Cement Creek that
may be the result of flooding the Sunnyside Mine underground workings. Quarterly
monitoring of surface flow volumes at existing Cement Creek sampling locations should
provide sufficient data to allow a determination of the impact of mine flooding on the
flow in Cement Creek.
It is the Division's view, as you are aware, that flow data from all monitoring points
included in the "seep study" can be used to determine if mine flooding causes
increased flow rates from adits, at seeps, or in main stems. The flow data is
particularly critical at main stem monitoring points CC-1 and SF-17, since these main
stem stations are most likely to experience increased flow according to the Simon
Hydro-Search reports. Every effort must be made to obtain regular quarterly data at
these stations. Regular quarterly flow data from main stem monitoring stations CG-1,
PG-1, and EC-34 is also highly desirable for the same reason, even though the Hydro-
Search report indicates that flow from the flooded workings to these stations is less
likely.
I would recommend that you install and monitor a rain gauge near station CC-1 to guard
against the possibility that flow surges in Cement Creek caused by precipitation
events would be erroneously interpreted to be an impact caused by mine flooding.
Thank you for providing the Cement Creek Conjunctive Flow Characterization, and for
continuing to provide on-going "seep study" monitoring program data in your annual
report. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Allen C. Sorenson
Reclamation Specialist
C:\WP51\SGC5
