THE CRYSTAL RIVER, DRAINAGE STUDY
August 1578 to May 1973 u Z
11
Introduction j UIN 198 I-
+YCG - ;:'tELf"-SEHvu_F_S
A water quality investigation of the Crystal River drainaohMO?-•I-kDRINGSECI1ON
GPA\0 JUNCTION
was undertaken in the summer of 1978. Of primary concern were
the detrimental effects by the Mid-Continent Coal Company (now
Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. ) and the Anschultz Coal Company
(now Snowmass Coal Company) to tributaries of the Crystal
River. The secondary purpose was to establish referral data
on this drainage for future monitoring or enforcement and locate
any deleterious situations which would require a more in depth
study.
Summary and Conclusions
1 . The Crystal River between the town of Crystal and
Redstone is a clean cold water fishery receiving no point
source discharaes.
2. The Redstone wastewater effluent flow was sO. low or
non-existent that no impact was recognizable in the Crystal
River. ,
3. The entire Crystal River exhibited excellent water
quality except for a few elevated heavy metals concentrations
at stations CR-8 and CR-9.
4. The Crystal River Fish Hatchery effluent did not pose
a waste loading problem to the Crystal River.
5. Stations CR-9 and CR-10 had high fecal coliform and
fecal streptococcus counts probably due to cattle grazing.
