HARLAN & ASSOCIATES, INC.
Mr. Walter Avramenko
Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment
June 3, 1996
Page 4
to provide a basis for focusing further site investigations should they be warranted. In
this regard, if environmental liabilities are identified through the initial screening efforts,
any further investigations will include the assessment of background conditions as an
integral component.
7. Commen : A septic system is located outside the northeast corner of the Maintenance
Shop. This waste disposal unit should also be sampled: either the contents of the septic
tank or the soils immediately adjacent to and beneath the distribution lines. Past
experience indicates that septic systems are used io dispose of materials other than
sanitary wastes. Similar testing should perhaps be per at the septic systems which
service the other buildings on-site, particularly if the site historical review and field
reconnaissance tasks suggest that materials other than sanitary wastes (e.g., solvents,
petroleum products, other cleaning solutions, etc.)could potentially have been discharged
to these systems.
Response: As part of the site investigation phase, ground-water discharge along the
embankment directly north and northeast of the maintenance shop/maintenance yard area
will be collected. This area is also directly downgradient from the maintenance shop
septic tank/leach field identified above.
o O o
If you have questions or if we can provide any additional information, please contact
either Ms. Diane Delaney with Mid-Continent Resources at (970) 945-4958 or me at (303) 988-
7270. We are looking forward to meeting with you on Friday, June 7th, 1996, to discuss the
proposed Environmental Site Assessment for the Coal Basin property.
Very truiy yours,
H i OCIATES, INC.
O '
Richard L.
