2 . 05 . 6 (3) Protection of Hydrologic Balance
1. Comment The ground water monitoring plan described in
Chapter IV does not include monitoring for water
quality. The applicant shall submit a plan that will
monitor the effect of mining operations on the water
quality of the Mesaverde and alluvial aquifers .
Reply Monitoring of ground water quality is covered
on page 19 of Chapter IV (Section C-7-b) . That section
also references the locations of ground water quality
data in Volume 5 - Hydrology Description. Added to
this data are current water quality sample data
through . April 1981. For information on the Mesa-
verde aquifer please see page 13 of III-E-2-g found in
Vol. 5 and page 21 of the Willard Owens Associates,
Inc . Hydrologic Report at Appendix III-E-1 in Vol. 5.
Vol. 5 (add latest ground water sample data to
Appendix III-E-2)
2 . Comment The text (Chapter IV, p. 19) states there are
four ground water monitoring wells . Exhibit III-E-1
indicates three wells are to be used for monitoring
purposes . The applicant shall include the location of
the fourth and any additional wells on Exhibit III-E-1 .
Reply The location of the four ground water monitor-
ing wells are indicated on Exhibit IV-C-1 as referenced
on page 19 of Chapter IV. The well locations are also
indicated on Exhibit III-E-1 .
Vol. 7 (Indicate location of 4th well on Exhibit
IV-C-1) .
3. Comment The text (Chapter IV, p. 25) states the Upper
and Piddle sandstone units of the Mesaverde Formation
possess transmissivities and specific yields of such
low values that regional hydrology would not be in-
fluenced significantly by mining activities. Chapter
III, Section C, p. 24 states that the transmissivities
of the three units in the Mesaverde are expected to
range from 10-2 to one ft/day, and the specific yield
is expected to range from 5-70 . The applicant should
provide specific data and a more detailed discussion
including methods used in these statements.
Reply See Willard-Owens letter dated May 22 , 1981.
Their answer to Question 3 . should clarify this comment.
Vol . 7 , Chap. IV (Add W-) explanation as Page
25. 1) .
