Dave Shelton, Director - Coal Program
Colorado Division of Mined Land Reclamation
723 New Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mr . Shelton:
In preparing the coal mining permit application for our
Coal Basin operation, we have one problem in complying with
the guidance on map scales as outlined in Section 2 .10 of
your Rules and Regulations .
Since our permit area is over twenty square miles and
contains five underground mine portals , the area above
underground workings , a coal preparation plant some distance
from the mines , over fifteen miles of road , powerlines and
pipelines in Coal Basin; it will be most difficult to comply
with a scale of 1 : 6 ,000 for all permit area map information.
In fact , our permit area is almost as large as our mine plan
area with the only difference being the four or five square
mile area above the underground workings of subsequent five
year phases . In several instances as indicated on the
attached map list, a scale of 1 : 12, 000 where the entire
permit area must be shown, provides the necessary detail and
is much easier to produce, handle and read than one at
1: 6, 000 which would be at least six feet square . A case in
point is the vegetation map which is also attached at a
scale of 1 : 12, 000 . At 1 : 6 , 000 this map would be twice the
size in both directions and most difficult to reproduce and
include with the permit application. Those maps and draw-
ings requiring greater detail will, of course, be done at
scales larger than 1: 6 , 000 requiring, in some cases , several
sheets .
