-2-
2.05.6(3)(b)(iii)
The ground water monitoring plan described in Chapter IV does not include
monitoring for water quality. The applicant shall submit a plan that will
monitor the effect of mining operations on the water quality of the Mesa-
verde and alluvial aquifers.
The text (Chapter IV, p. la) states there are four ground water monitoring
wells. Exhibit III-E-1 indicates three wells are to be used for monitor-
ing purposes. The applicant shall include the location of the fourth and
any additional wells on Exhibit III-E-1.
The text (Chapter IV, P. 19) states that wells will be installed in refuse
and tunnel spoil disposal areas for monitoring. The applicant shall pro-
vide a list of parameters that will be sampled in the monitoring plan to
determine if infiltrating water is leaching undesirable materials from the
spoil.
2.05.6(3)(b)(iv)
The text (Chapter IV, p. 25) states the Upper and Middle sandstone units
of the Mesaverde Formation possess transmissivi ties and specific yields of
such low values that regional hydrology would not be influenced signifi-
cantly by mining activities. Chapter III, Section C, p. 25 states that
the transmissivities of the three units in the Mesaverde are expected to
range from 10-2 to one ft/day, and the specific yield is expected to
range from 5-7%. The applicant should provide specific data and a more
detailed discussion including methods used in these statements.
Chapter III, Section E, p. 12 discusses the impacts of mining on ground
water quantity. The applicant should include a discussion of the impacts
on ground water quality.
Table 783. 15.4 reports levels of iron and manganese in the Coal Creek
alluvium that are extremely high. If this is not a typographical error ,
the applicant should provide an explanation of the source of these levels.
2.05.6(3)(b)(iv)
The applicant shall provide a discussion of the possible impacts to the
quantity and quality of the surface water in the permit and adjacent area
as a result of the mining operations.
