AdRik
-37-
There are no known users of ground water from these strata within at
least a two-mile radius from the edge of the mine. Therefore, no impacts
should result from the dewatering of the mine workings. When mining is
completed in Coal Basin, the water levels in the aquifers should showly
return to original , pre-mining elevations.
The disposal of mine and processing waste materials at the mine have the
potential to degrade the quality of the alluvial ground water of Coal
Creek. A geochemical analysis of the roof and floor rock and coal (see
page III-D-37 of the permit application) failed to indicate any toxic or
hazardous materials. In addition, seven years of ground and surface
water monitoring, during which time similar wastes were being disposed
of, indicate no adverse affects to date. Therefore, it is concluded that
this potential impact is insignificant. If an impact were occur, the
existing monitoring system, is adequate for early detect'
The proposed rock tunnel at the mine will be con ucted into the hlancos
shale fornation and proceed e stratigr c
u c ree coa s oughout this distance, the jA
t oz e%tte, i s nd ea-eitiddl s s es 11 .( "s
Lve
potential aquifers the wa ers otl these aqua ers may mix
h within the tunnel ?
ecause o is, i t important that, upon final reclama ion, these
aquifers be seal off such that no further mixing would occur. In
addition, t urf ace seal of the tunnel must be adequate to prevent the
leakag ground water onto the surface. Therefore, the following
st ation is added to the permit: k
k Stipulation No. 5
r BY FEBRUARY, 1 , 1984, THE PERMITT SHALLkB11IT AN ACCEPTABLE PLAN (m
` FOR SEALING THE RUCK TUNNEL ADIT THIS PLAN SHALL CONTAIN, AT A
Aw MINIMUM, SPECIFICATIONS FOR SEALING THE PORTIONS OF THE ROCK TUNNE
THAT CROSS THE CUZZETTE, ROLLINS, AND MIDDLE SANDSTONES TO PREVENT
FUTURE MIXING OF WATERS IN THESE AQUIFERS AND SHALL INCLUQE
SPECIFICATIONS FOR SEALING THE ADITS TO PREVENT GROUND WATER FROM 6 7
F WING FROM THE RUCK TUNNEL ONTO THE SURFACE. 0&t '
(Cumulative Ground Water Imoacts
C`e ,+S 'D ring this five-year permit period, the impacts of the Sunlight Mine, the North Thompson Creek Mines and the Coal Basin ,`lines on ground water /
quality and quantity will be localized in areas aajacent to the mine. I
During the life of the North Thompson Creek .lines and the Coal Basin
Mines, the areas affected by these mines will eventually join. When
tnese two mines eventually join, .the North Thompson Creek and Coal basin
-nines will 'both impact the ground water in the aquifers in the Coal Creek
Basin. The Sunlight MMine Nill not produce a cumulative ground water
impact with any other mine in the Roaring Fork Drainage during its
l ife-of-mine.
